Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy

Home Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy

Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy

Fiberoptic bronchoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that allows a doctor to directly visualize the airways and lungs using a thin, flexible tube called a bronchoscope. It helps assess lung conditions, collect samples, remove obstructions, or guide treatment with high precision.

Why It's Done / Treatments Offered

Fiberoptic bronchoscopy is used for:

  • Diagnosing lung infections, tumors, or interstitial lung diseases
  • Collecting tissue (biopsy), mucus, or fluid samples
  • Removing mucus plugs, foreign bodies, or tumors
  • Evaluating persistent cough, unexplained bleeding, or abnormal imaging findings
  • Guiding further interventions (e.g., lavage, stent placement)

Common Causes That Require Bronchoscopy

  • Unexplained chronic cough
  • Hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
  • Abnormal findings on chest X-ray or CT scan
  • Suspected lung cancer or tuberculosis
  • Persistent lung infections or non-resolving pneumonia
  • Airway blockages or structural abnormalities

Symptoms That May Lead to This Test

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Chronic cough with or without sputum
  • Recurrent chest infections
  • Wheezing or stridor (noisy breathing)
  • Blood in sputum
  • Unexplained weight loss and fatigue

Prevention & When to See a Doctor

While bronchoscopy itself is a test, many of the underlying lung conditions can be prevented or managed early by:

  • Avoiding smoking and air pollutants
  • Getting timely vaccinations (e.g., flu, pneumonia)
  • Managing chronic illnesses like asthma and COPD
  • Seeking early medical attention for respiratory symptoms
  • Regular follow-ups if you’re at risk for TB or lung cancer
  • COPD & Asthma
  • Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD)
  • Tuberculosis (TB)
  • Respiratory Infections & ARDS
  • Sleep Apnoea & Sleep Disorders
  • Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy
  • Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) & Sleep Study Interpretation
  • ICU & Critical Care
